0:02

Sandy, how are you?

0:10

- I am well.

0:12

How are you doing, Judy?

0:13

- I'm doing well.

0:14

Thank you, Sandy, for asking.

0:17

Thank you for joining "15 Minutes with Judy."

0:19

Hi, everyone.

0:20

I'm Judy Platt, Chief Customer Officer here

0:22

at Support Logic.

0:24

And today I am blessed, honored, and thrilled

0:28

to be joined by one of my favorite people in our industry.

0:31

Sandy Kofenas, no.

0:34

Sandy Koe, I'm not used to saying your married name, Sandy.

0:37

- That's okay.

0:38

I mean, honestly, if we have to edit Fonseca,

0:41

oh, my husband is more than understanding.

0:43

- No, no, we're going with Sandy Koe Fonseca

0:46

because it's a beautiful, beautiful name.

0:50

I just send you Sandy Koe for so many years.

0:52

- Oh no.

0:53

- So Sandy, you are the founder and principal

0:56

of Customer Contact Women, CC Women.

0:59

- Mm-hmm.

1:00

- And it is an absolutely, absolutely amazing organization.

1:05

And you're an amazing person.

1:06

You're recognized now.

1:11

Women entrepreneurs are named to In-Sight Successes,

1:15

top 10 most ambitious women in business to follow.

1:20

That's a mouthful, but that's amazing.

1:21

- Yeah, thank you.

1:23

I want to talk about why CC Women.

1:27

Why did you feel the need to build this organization

1:32

from nothing?

1:33

- So first of all, I love Judy.

1:35

And the reason why she was our first class of inductees

1:39

for the CC Women Hall of Fame,

1:41

just the work that she's done to mentor

1:43

and support and advocate for other women,

1:46

that's incredible.

1:48

It's because of women like Judy that I created CC Women.

1:52

I went to our first Customer Contact Week advisory board meeting

1:56

and just met really successful women like yourself, Judy,

2:00

executive titles, working at big corporations,

2:04

like women like Cheryl China with Becky Plaker,

2:07

Colleen Beards, Dr. Hae Rookertis.

2:09

And the thing that really shocked and awed me

2:12

was the way that these women commanded the room,

2:15

full of men, by the way,

2:17

while also being very authentically themselves.

2:21

So my question was, how did these women do it?

2:25

How do they have these leadership roles

2:27

at these big corporations?

2:29

How do they speak their minds freely?

2:31

And for me, watching women like that,

2:34

watching women like Judy,

2:35

I needed to learn their secrets to success,

2:38

because at that time,

2:40

when I was thinking about my career

2:43

and starting at this company, I was 28 years old

2:46

and I was living at home with my parents

2:48

with absolutely no direction in life, by the way.

2:51

And I was just sick of having zero direction,

2:54

not feeling valued at a company.

2:56

And I certainly did not have a sense of belonging anywhere.

3:00

And I feel like that felt a lot worse.

3:02

That kind of just like added to the pile of,

3:04

"Oh man, what am I gonna do with my life?"

3:07

But seeing these women,

3:09

I just kind of took matters into my own hands.

3:11

I reached out to some of these women on the advisory board

3:15

and asked them for some of their time.

3:18

Eventually, some of these women became my mentors,

3:20

my coaches and my own advisory board.

3:23

And they helped me to go my career

3:25

and develop these skills,

3:26

these strengths that I have,

3:28

that I never knew they were my strengths.

3:31

So they came and they helped me,

3:34

they helped me develop,

3:36

they molded me into who I am today.

3:38

And then came CC Women,

3:41

where I wanted to provide that same kind of support

3:44

and network to other women,

3:46

women in customer contact, 'cause that's where I'm at.

3:49

Because Judy, to be honest with you,

3:51

my story about feeling lost,

3:55

that's not all that unique.

3:57

I feel like a lot of women, a lot of people in general,

3:59

maybe in their 20s,

4:00

my 20s were a lot of figuring things out,

4:03

but I just didn't know what to do.

4:05

And I feel like a lot of people have that kind of story as well too.

4:09

A lot of women in customer contact

4:11

might be going through the same thing.

4:12

So created CC Women,

4:15

because yes, we do live in a very male dominated world

4:20

and it will take us time to reach gender equality, equity,

4:25

pay equality as well to pay equity.

4:28

But right now, what I can do is the things that I learned

4:32

from these wonderful, smart, successful women,

4:36

I can give back to my community now

4:38

so that we can collectively work together

4:41

to progress and elevate the presence of women,

4:44

not only in customer contact,

4:46

but just women in business,

4:48

because this is a everyone issue

4:50

and not a customer contact issue.

4:52

If that all makes sense.

4:54

- It does, it makes perfect sense.

4:56

And Sandy, when I think about CC Women

5:00

and what it gives, not only to me,

5:03

but to the women that I'm connected with through CC Women,

5:07

I hope on the daily,

5:10

that you take that moment

5:13

and you really do realize what you built

5:16

and what you give to all of us,

5:19

because it is something special.

5:22

And there's a group of us in text,

5:26

that chatter with each other a little bit.

5:29

And I realize I owe that group a text sometime today.

5:33

I just need to share something that's going on in my world.

5:36

And you've built that,

5:38

like you're making it a safe place for us

5:40

to talk about these things.

5:41

So thank you.

5:43

- And for us.

5:45

Thank you.

5:45

- Yeah, and I think just off of that too, Judy.

5:48

I know I created this for others,

5:51

but it really started off from my own selfish needs, right?

5:54

It was my own desire,

5:56

my own selfish need to find women

5:58

that I can actually talk to.

5:59

And going back to that,

6:01

the sentiment about creating this network

6:05

and having the space for women,

6:07

I viewed networking as a very transactional thing,

6:10

but realizing with this community,

6:13

and especially for women,

6:14

like we need more than that.

6:15

We need that space

6:17

where we can have comfortable conversations

6:20

and a safe space to talk about things.

6:22

And I think that's the biggest thing here.

6:24

Women just might not have that space to do so.

6:27

Your company might be very women forward,

6:31

meaning you guys have ERGs for women

6:34

or women driven groups or flexible hours

6:36

or and and and,

6:38

but sometimes it's hard to talk to fellow coworkers

6:41

about what you're going through.

6:44

It's easier to talk to folks who are outside

6:46

of your company or your direct organization

6:50

where we can meet up with other women

6:52

from different verticals and different walks in life

6:56

and share call, text, FaceTime,

6:58

and just like do all of that outside

7:00

of like a networking situation

7:03

where we're always like whole to do

7:05

or make connections that way.

7:07

So I do love and very much appreciate

7:10

this community of women.

7:12

They are like you said,

7:13

they're just so welcoming and very kind

7:16

and they always have time for women like me.

7:19

So very much appreciative of women like you

7:23

as well to Judy who make the time

7:25

and who realize that mentorship

7:27

and this type of community is very, very important.

7:31

- Absolutely, without a doubt.

7:33

And I know we'll be together soon in person

7:35

and I'm looking forward to that with them.

7:37

- Yeah, it's always a good time when we're together.

7:40

So let's talk a little bit about,

7:43

you know, the services of CC Women,

7:46

it's mentorship, it's networking,

7:48

career development, things like that.

7:50

You know, and here we are glowing about the organization

7:54

but there has to be one story in there somewhere

7:57

that stands out to you about the impact

8:01

that women has had.

8:04

And for anybody listening and looking for what I would call

8:07

that safe place to land,

8:09

what's one example of a story that you're willing to share

8:12

about CC Women's impact on someone?

8:15

- Yeah, so I have a couple,

8:17

I think yes, we talked a lot about building relationships here,

8:22

just building this community,

8:23

but I think people forget that,

8:27

yes, CC Women is a place where we can vent, absolutely,

8:31

but we also have a lot of different solutions

8:34

and tools for people.

8:36

So when people take us up on that offer

8:38

and like they're actually using our tools or resources

8:40

and actually making value out of some of the things

8:43

that we do offer, it's great.

8:45

And one of the big things we found is connecting people

8:49

so that they can find new job opportunities.

8:52

That's a big one.

8:53

And then also sharing things about salary negotiations

8:57

or promotions, how to go about asking for those.

9:00

And we've heard from women that have directly come up to me

9:04

and said, because of this session

9:07

that you provided at a CC Women's Summit,

9:10

by the way was with way, Dr. Wei,

9:13

she did a session about salary negotiations

9:17

and how to ask for a promotion.

9:20

And it was very clear, very direct, very succinct

9:23

and she had a side deck about it.

9:24

But women in that session were able to have open conversations

9:29

about how do I go about doing this

9:31

and what do I need to prepare?

9:35

And one woman in that session asked the question,

9:38

this is what I'm going through,

9:39

this is what I would like and this is what I want it to look like

9:44

in terms of my salary and promotion.

9:47

So afterwards, her and Wei had a conversation

9:50

and a couple months down the road,

9:52

I get a message saying that she did exactly what Wei,

9:56

Dr. Wei, is set to do,

9:57

is she got that promotion and that salary raise.

10:00

So the fact that, yes, we have these wonderful sessions

10:04

and we talk about so many various topics

10:06

that pertain to women,

10:08

but the fact that people are actually very curious to learn

10:12

and actually apply those to their professional career

10:16

so that they can advance,

10:18

like at that moment, I was like, okay,

10:20

we are doing something right.

10:22

We are resonating with women,

10:24

it makes sense to them and it's actually helpful

10:28

and tangible that they can do this on their own

10:31

after this session and after this guidance from Dr. Wei.

10:34

So that moment was like, wow,

10:38

we're doing something, we're like making a difference.

10:40

So that felt really great for me,

10:43

knowing that they're doing the right thing here.

10:46

Another thing is job opportunities, it's hard.

10:50

I know the job market varies all the time,

10:52

but when you are looking for a new job

10:55

or you just need to leave to protect your mental health

10:59

or they're just not flexible with you,

11:01

you're current employer,

11:03

we've been a great network to help women

11:05

find their next opportunity or identify also

11:08

their strengths and help them

11:10

in finding their next opportunity.

11:12

So whether it is the process of building a resume

11:16

or fine tuning it or doing some practice interview questions

11:21

or just helping them find the next opportunity as well

11:25

to connecting people and introducing them

11:28

to the HR or the recruiter,

11:31

we've been able to do that as well too.

11:33

So the fact that women are saying like,

11:35

wow, you helped me or your network,

11:38

the CC women has helped me to find the next opportunity

11:42

because I was able to have these connections

11:44

and talk to other women in a very safe place.

11:48

I got my next job or I got my next gig lined up

11:50

and I'm able to do this because of this.

11:52

So that too, I think has been very, very impactful to hear

11:57

that we're not just a network that we're like,

12:00

okay, we meet once in a while, we have a great time,

12:03

we eat carbs and drink and have fun,

12:06

but like we're actually doing what we meant to do,

12:09

our mission and purpose to elevate women

12:12

and support women.

12:13

And I think those two moments,

12:15

when that woman told me her story that she found a job,

12:20

she or she seemed she was able to get that raise

12:23

and other women coming saying, I found a job

12:25

or I have all these opportunities lined up,

12:28

I'm talking to these people because of your people,

12:32

the people in your network,

12:34

that's been really, really cool

12:36

and just really touching to see that I'm doing the right thing

12:40

and I need to continue to do the right thing

12:41

to support other women here as well too.

12:44

- It is amazing.

12:45

I recall, I think it was our last conference together.

12:49

We had somebody there in the room.

12:52

She was anxious to give a presentation,

12:56

we all lifted her up and I remember,

13:00

she did a beautiful job and then she left

13:03

and when she returned, she was part of a reduction in force

13:07

and I'll never forget that when she told the community

13:11

about it, your community, everyone just rallied very quickly.

13:18

How can we help, what can we do, have you looked here

13:21

or et cetera?

13:22

And I'm so glad that she was so willing to share.

13:27

It was a big event and there was a lot of reasons

13:31

why that presentation was hard for her

13:33

and yet she did it and she nailed it

13:36

and to go from the highest of highs

13:39

to literally hours later, but it's meaningful.

13:44

Like you said, that you have a place to come

13:46

and talk about these things

13:47

and you don't feel judged.

13:50

- Yeah, because I mean, who are we to judge, right?

13:54

And also too, if I'm going through something,

13:55

you're going through something,

13:57

I know there's other women who has either gone through

14:00

the same thing or they're going through it currently

14:03

and like, yes, it takes a lot to be vulnerable.

14:06

Don't get me wrong, that is a task in itself.

14:09

But once you do open that door,

14:12

we do have a wonderful community that rallies around you

14:15

and I also wanna point out that, yes,

14:17

we do have women in our community who are just phenomenal,

14:21

but we have wonderful allies in our community as well too.

14:24

And I really do believe that, you know, yes,

14:28

women can do it.

14:29

We are so, so smart and so powerful,

14:33

but sometimes without the help of our male allies,

14:36

it's difficult.

14:38

And I think just to kind of progress a little bit quicker,

14:41

I do think we need male allies

14:43

and we have a wonderful group of male allies here

14:46

who do rally around and who support, celebrate,

14:50

just as much as the women in our community do as well too.
